A letter in the March OBM has prompted me to put pen to paper – Peter Cowlan’s exploits on his 650 Triumph, and it was the photo of Hartland Quay hillclimb that caught my eye.
I would have been there myself in March 1980, racing my 250 Enfield, and remember Peter riding many sprints and hillclimbs in the southwest.
My interest in racing started by accidentally coming across a twisty sprint in progress.
I live at The Lizard in Cornwall and about two miles away, hidden between gorse bushes and willow trees, was a closed-to-club meeting that was the Predannick bent sprint.
The smell of ‘R’ and the sound of racing engines: I thought, I want some more of that!
